What I earned

In April 2025 I completed NVIDIA's AI Infrastructure and Operations Fundamentals and earned the certificate. It was a deliberate move to formalize a shift I'd already started making — from traditional infrastructure and automation toward the systems that AI actually runs on.

The course grounds the fundamentals of running AI in production, straight from the vendor whose hardware most of it runs on:

  • The essentials of AI, machine learning, and deep learning, and where GPU-accelerated compute fits.
  • NVIDIA's hardware and software stack for AI workloads — the building blocks of an AI data center.
  • The operational side: deploying, monitoring, and managing AI infrastructure and workloads.
  • The infrastructure and MLOps concepts that sit underneath real AI systems, not just the models on top.

What I learned

The most valuable shift was learning to treat AI as an infrastructure and operations problem, not just a modeling one. A model is only useful once something reliably serves it, schedules the compute, monitors it, and keeps it running — and that "something" is exactly where my background gives me an edge.

  • How GPU-accelerated compute changes the shape of a data center, and why AI workloads stress infrastructure differently than traditional applications.
  • Where the operational failure points live — provisioning, utilization, monitoring — and how they map onto the operations discipline I already knew.
  • The vocabulary and mental model to talk about AI infrastructure with the people who buy it, run it, and depend on it.

Why it mattered

I came from an infrastructure and ServiceNow background, and I could see the center of gravity in tech shifting toward AI. This was my first NVIDIA certification and a deliberate step across that line — proof, to myself and to anyone hiring, that I understood the plumbing AI runs on and not just the demos.

Everything I've built since sits on that foundation: self-hosted LLM servers, agentic AI systems, AI governance and audit tooling, and AI woven into enterprise platforms like ServiceNow. The cert didn't make me an AI engineer — the work since did — but it's where I planted the flag.
